Timeline for implementation of provision relating to permissible limit of calcium and magnesium in packaged drinking water extended upto 1.07.2020, says FSSAI

In a Notification dated 8th January, 2020 the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has extended the timeline for implementation of the provision related to “permissible limit of calcium and magnesium in packaged drinking water (other than mineral water)” under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Fourth Amendment Regulations, 2019 (“2019 Regulations”) upto a period of 1st July, 2020.

Background:

Previously, by a Notification dated 30th October, 2019 FSSAI had issued the 2019 Regulations in order to amend certain provisions of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations). The 2019 Regulations had come into force on 30th October, 2019 i.e. on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.

The 2019 Regulations inserts a new provision for decaffeinated roasted and ground coffee which explains the process of preparation and the standard of Decaffeinated coffee and further revised the permissible limit of calcium and magnesium in packaged drinking water (other than mineral water).

However, FSSAI has received representations regarding transmission period for the implementation of Clause 2(b) of the said Notification which deals with the permissible limit of magnesium and calcium in packaged drinking water.  Pursuant to the representations, FSSAI has now extended the timeline to 1st July, 2020 for implementation of the said clause.
