MOEF clarifies applicability of EIA Notification 2006 for coal tar pitch melting

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Impact Assessment (IA) Division (“MOEF”) has issued a clarification regarding applicability of EIA Notification 2006 for coal tar pitch melting.

MOEF on receipt of number of requests on this matter and after examining the same has decided that the process of melting of coal tar pitch involves only physical change from solid (granular) form to liquid form and there are no emissions into the air and water. MOEF, therefore, informs that coal tar pitch melting does not attract the provisions of the EIA Notification, 2006.

However, other statutory clearances under Forest (Conservation) Act 1980, Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974, Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981, etc. may be obtained as applicable as per site conditions.
