FSSAI approves Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2017
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”), vide a notification dated 22nd November 2017, has informed that the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2017 has been approved by FSSAI and the same is under process of notification.
Providing further clarity, FSSAI has declared that the approved Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2017 shall be in operation with effect from 18th October 2017 till the time it is notified.
The key highlights of the Regulations are as follows:
- Manufacturers of fortified food to comply with standards on micronutrient content in such food product.
- Manufacturers and packer of fortified food is required to make an undertaking on quality assurance and submit evidence of steps taken in this regard to the FSSAI.
- Packers of the fortified food are required to consider the nature of the fortificant added and its effect on the shelf life of such food while packing.
- Every package of fortified food shall carry the words “fortified with ………… (name of the fortificant)” and the fortification logo.
