Ministry of Road Transport and Highways amends the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, specifies tests for renewal of fitness certificate for vehicles/ items for differently abled passengers

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (“Ministry”), through a notification dated 27th December, 2019, has brought into effect certain changes to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 which was previously notified via draft amendments, dated 24th July, 2019.

The changes that have been notified are in relation to tests (given in the table under the proviso in Rule 62 sub-rule 1) that need to be carried out before renewal of fitness certificate. The amendments which are now brought into effect are inserting new items such as Priority Seats, Signs, securing of crutches/ canes/walker, hand rail/stanchions controls at priority seats for differently abled passengers and Wheel chair entry/housing/ locking in the said table along with the tests to be carried out for them for renewal of fitness.

The following insertion in the said table made by the Ministry will come into effect on 1st March, 2020:
