Karnataka Pollution Control Board issues the capacity for cleaning used barrel recyclers under Hazardous and Other Waste Management Rules

The Karnataka Pollution Control Board (“KPCB”) has in a circular dated 16th May, 2019 enumerated the cleaning capacity for used barrel recyclers under Hazardous and Other Waste (Management & Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 (“Rules”).

According to the Rules, the quantities of hazardous waste are required to be expressed in terms of weight and KPCB is stipulating numbers for certain categories like used barrels. Some of the units are giving the quantities by weight others by numbers. Hence, there is a necessity to streamline the quantities indicated in the consent and authorization to enable KPCB to properly estimate the waste barrels disposed by the generator.

KPCB has therefore come up with the following formula for the purpose of granting consent:

  • Number of barrels considered for cleaning /hour = 4;
  • Number of working hours (2 shifts) = 16
  • Number of barrels that can be cleaned /day = 64
  • Weight of barrels that can be cleaned/day = 448 kgs

The abovementioned data is for 1 bay cleaning, if the industry has area and facility for 2 bay cleaning, then the capacity is double. (128 nos/896 kgs).
