Hospitals having above 500 beds must supply drinking water in glass bottles instead of plastic by 15th December, 2018

In a progressive move to regulate use of plastic in sectors where alternate and safe techniques / methods are available, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (“Board”) has imposed a ban on using of plastic PET bottles for the supply of packaged drinking water in Star Hotels and Resorts, Hospitals with more than 500 beds and houseboats (“Units”).

The Board has directed the Units to use glass bottles instead of plastic.

Further, the Board permits these Units to establish water purifier or treatment plants or RO plants and glass bottle sterilization units.

A timeline of 6 months i.e. till 15th December, 2018 has been set for these Units to stop using plastic bottles for supply of drinking water in their premises.
