FSSAI revises Alcoholic Beverages Standards; reduces font size of statutory warning on smaller packs of alcoholic beverages

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) after due deliberation with the Scientific Panel on Water and Beverages, has modified the specifications of the statutory warning labels to be placed on alcoholic beverages. As per the modification, Regulation 5.12 has been modified as follows:

  1. For alcoholic beverages having pack size till 200ml, the font size of the statutory warning should not be less than 1.5 mm.
  2. For alcoholic beverages having pack size above 200ml, the font size should not be less than 3mm.

Background:

The FSSAI had notified the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages Standards) Regulations, 2018 on 19th March 2018, where under Regulation 5.12, there is a requirement for indicating a  statutory warning “CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH”, “BE SAFE-DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE”. This statutory warning had to be printed with a font size of at least 3 mm.

There were challenges in complying with the 3mm font size for smaller packs of alcoholic beverages and therefore, the discussion with the scientific panel was held to implement the revision in line with the specifications (1) and (2) given above.
