FSSAI rectifies labelling regulations for packages containing imported alcoholic beverages; importers must ensure implementation of the same

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has, in a Notification dated 14th January, 2019 announced that with a view to facilitate ease of trade while ensuring the safety of food imported into India, it has decided to provide a special dispensation for rectification of labelling deficiencies under Regulation 5.12 of the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018 which mandate that every package containing alcoholic beverages must bear a statutory warning stating “Consumption of Alcohol is injurious to health. Be safe. Don’t drink and drive.”

Process of Rectification

The rectification will be done by affixing a single non-detachable sticker or by any other non-detachable method next to the principal display panel without altering or masking the original label information. The importers of Alcoholic Beverages must ensure that rectification is carried out on their imported goods at Customs bound warehouses, before visual inspection or re-inspection by the Authorised Officer or his representative.
