FSSAI proposes to include drinking water offered or sold through water vending machines to comply with required food standards

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) invites objections / suggestions on the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2018 (“Draft Amendment”) dated 15th May, 2018, which is amending the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations”).

Objections or suggestions, may be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at regulation@fssai.gov.in. The last date for submission of objections / suggestions from stakeholders is15th June, 2018.

Following amendment has been proposed under the Principal Regulations:

4. Packaged drinking water shall be clear without any sediments, suspended particles and extraneous matter. It shall also comply with the requirements given in Tables 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

4. Packaged Drinking Water and Drinking water offered or sold through water vending machines shall be clear without any sediments, suspended particles and extraneous matter. It shall also comply with the requirements given in Tables 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The Draft Amendment proposes toinclude drinking water offered or sold through water vending machines along with packaged drinking water to comply with the relevant food standards (like, maintaining permissible Microbiological Requirements, Organoleptic and physical parameters, etc.) under the chapter of Food Product Standards under the Principal Regulations.

The Principal Regulations only apply to Packaged Drinking Water (other than Mineral Water). The Draft Amendment proposes to cover drinking water offered / sold through water vending machines too.
