FSSAI likely to revise Additives Regulations; Sharbat to contain minimum 25 % juice or extract of fruit / vegetable / nut / herb / flower / spice

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently on 12th March, 2019 released the Draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2019 proposing to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.

Comments and suggestions are invited to be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FDA Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi- 110002 or sent on email at regulation@fssai.gov.in till 11th April, 2019.

Key Highlights:

  • Sharbat is proposed to contain minimum 25 percent of juice or extract of fruit or vegetable or nut or herb or flower or spice, alone or in combination.
  • Sharbat and Synthetic Syrup should be free from burnt or objectionable taints, flavours, artificial sweetening agents, extraneous matter and crystallization. These items  will also have to meet the permissible limits of the parameters such as Acidity as citric acid Max, Specific Gravity, Total Soluble Solids, Percent by mass and pH.
