FSSAI issues the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2018

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (“FSSAI”) has, vide a Notification (F. No. Stds / O&F / Notification (5) / FSSAI-2016) dated 20th February, 2018 in the Official Gazette, issued the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) First Amendment Regulations, 2018(“Amendment Regulations”) to further amend the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 (“Principal Regulations”).

The Amendment Regulations have inserted a new sub-regulation 2.2.7 under regulation 2.2 of the Principal Regulations, which lays down the fatty acid composition which must be maintained in the oils and fats covered under regulation 2.2.

The Amendment Regulations shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette i.e. 26th February, 2018

Background:

  • The FSSAI had, vide a notification dated the 19th June, 2017, published the draft Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2017 (“Draft Regulations”) in the Official Gazette, inviting objections and suggestions from the persons likely to be affected thereby, before the expiry of the period of thirty days from 22nd June, 2017, on which the copies of the Gazette containing the said notification were made available to the public.
  • After considering the objections and suggestions received from the public in respect of the Draft Regulations, the FSSAI issued the Amendment Regulation.
