Bihar Government introduces Bihar Wood Based Industries (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2018, to regulate industries that processes wood/ other plant produces

Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bihar (“Department”, has recently introduced the Bihar Wood Based Industries (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2018 (“Bill”) to bring in the Bihar Wood Based Industries (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2018 (“Act”). This is for regulating wood- based industries that processes wood and / or other plant produces as its raw material (Saw mills/ veneer/ plywood or any other form such as sandal, resin, katha wood etc).

After the Act commences, no person engaged in wood-based industries will be able to establish and / or operate any wood- based industry, without a license under the Act and will also have to follow the conditions upon which the license is granted.

The Department has also determined the restricted, protected and prohibited areas, where the wood- based industries will not be allowed to be established.

As deforestation is a major concern all over India, the Bill has been drafted keeping in view the need to protect and conserve the forests and the tree cover in the State of Bihar.
